The abandoned house across the street could have been plucked straight out of a horror movie. I was waiting for a murderer risen from the grave to run out wielding an ax or for a ghost to appear in the window to beckon us closer.

“That’s not going to be easy to search,” Caleb mumbled from my side, his lips puckered in a cute pout. “Especially when we don’t know what we’re looking for.”

I heaved a long sigh. “Stating the obvious, Tinkerbell.”

He scowled. “That nickname is really getting old.”

“No, it’s not.” I tugged on his hand, flashing a smile. “Lighten up. We’re finally out of Shade. Let’s not waste it.” I’d wanted to visit this place earlier, but I was detained until sundown.

The fae prince kicked a pebble down the street. “I thought Ravina would shackle you to her for the rest of the day.”

A frown pulled at my lips. The Unseelie princess had been stuck to my side all day, peppering me with questions on my relationship with Lorcan. She was obviously searching for proof that our engagement was fake. Thankfully, Caleb rescued me with a lie that the king wanted us to check something for him in demon territory, and Lachlan played along. He probably sensed the thin string of control barely holding Caleb together.

“Your father should warn her I’m not all that stable. I wouldn’t want to accidentally drain her life.”

Caleb snorted. “That would be a shame.”

We stepped off the sidewalk and crossed the street, but two figures strolled from the back of the neighboring house before we entered the overgrown yard.

“Josh?” The last time I saw Aiden’s friend, he was strapped to a cot in the creepy basement of Mercy Hospital being drained of blood.

He pulled up short, throwing sable curls over the black frames of his glasses. “Uh, hi, Thea.”

“That’s her?” The guy next to him with broad shoulders and golden blond hair ogled my chest.

Josh shoved his hands into the front pockets of his black hoodie. “Yeah, this is Aiden’s friend.”

“And who are you?” Caleb asked as the guy—who was more than twice the size of Josh—continued to stare like he wanted to take a bite out of me.

“This is Scott.” Josh elbowed the huge teenager, barely making a noticeable hit. “He lives around the corner.”

Why did that name sound familiar? “Are you the football player that gave Aiden a black eye a few months ago?”

The color drained from Scott’s cheeks, and he awkwardly shifted in his sneakers. “Oh, um, yeah.” He palmed the back of his neck. “I told him I was sorry.”

“Have you heard anything from Aiden?” Josh asked, stealing my attention from the douchebag jock before I could give him a black eye as payback. “His mom hasn’t yet.”

The sweet kid wouldn’t recognize his best friend now. “No, but I ran into that detective. He’s still looking for him.”

Josh nudged Scott toward the sidewalk. “He’ll turn up soon, right? I’m sure he’s okay.”

No, he wasn’t.

“Definitely. He’s a smart guy.” I choked back the lump trying to claw up my throat.
